ABSTRACT

People's greatest collective fears, at least according to historical accounts, are the fears of invasion or conquest by malevolent or sentient forces. The unseen invasion—the conquest not recognized until it is over is—immortalized in the legend of the Trojan Horse, which instead of being battled by defenders is brought into the city by the people being invaded. Despite the inevitable furor about guns that was reignited after that horror, the idea that it's not the guns but the shooters was what prevailed. Some people feel frustrated or trapped by our machines and devices, even though people depend on them totally. Smart as a smart phone may be, it isn't smart enough to have malice aforethought. And that's where our tech-immersed consciousness has led us catastrophically astray. To free ourselves from the clutches of the industrial behemoth people need first to disabuse of the belief that technology is mindless and therefore morally innocent.
