ABSTRACT

The recent meeting between the Chief Rabbi and General de Gaulle, and the latter’s letter to Mr Ben Gurion call for a brief comment but not, it seems to me, any amendment to the text which follows. In connection with the phrase which provoked so much emotion, ‘an élite people, self-assured and domineering’, the President of the Republic now assures us that ‘there can be nothing unkind in emphasizing the characteristic that has enabled this steadfast people to survive and to remain itself through nineteen centuries passed in conditions without parallel.’
