ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a more integrative research by extending the emerging literature on empowerment to a cross-cultural setting and empirically examines the relationship between empowerment and several anticipated outcomes. Despite the criticism that empowerment is simply a tool for exploitation empowerment has become intertwined with ideas of modern management and has become an important management goal within many organizations. This study is exploratory in intent and employs a survey that allows the analysis of the relationship of empowerment to a wide range of work-life measures: job satisfaction, job involvement, intent to turnover, organizational commitment, organizational justice, and burnout. The relationship of empowerment to work productivity/ effectiveness is explored. These variables were chosen as they are reflective of quality of work life. The chapter details the values and norms of the Mexican business culture with the cultural values underlying businesses in the United States.
