ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to enhance the understanding of the relationship between intragroup conflict and group outcomes. Studying punk bands offers similarities and differences to prior research which will allow for a more exhaustive consideration of conflict and group outcomes. The chapter examines conflict in a relatively unstudied work context—a work environment involving creativity and performance/psychomotor tasks. The process of conceiving new ideas for artistic expression through music and conveying those ideas to an audience may present several challenges to knowledge-base regarding conflict and performance. The chapter focuses on the relationship-task typology of conflict to investigate a more thorough array of conflict types to explain group performance. It considers a broader array of group outcomes, including the types of team performance effectiveness and other behavioral outcomes. In addition to performance, the chapter also examines two other group outcomes—specifically, band longevity, and turnover.
