ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide the practices and theories of competency modelling by proposing a Manager-Job (M-J) Competency Fit model that draws on both approaches to examine the degree of alignment between individual and job competency. The model has four inter-related aspects of occupational competence: technical expectations, managing contingencies, managing different work activities, and managing the interface with the work environment. While this model is more dynamic than the UK occupational standards, it lacks specificity in relation to the range of potential skills in task management and job/role environment categories and does not include any explicit roles for knowledge, cognitive competence or ethics and values. The research interest on the Mintzberg’s framework further attests to its relevance and validity in describing managerial work in environment. Mintzberg's managerial roles framework is well received for its realism in depicting managerial work unlike the abstract description by the classical writers.
