ABSTRACT

Granville Hicks might have succeeded, only Stuart explained that he was a Communist of sorts, so he was a little too late. It is harder to re-convert people. Maybe the only solution to world problems would be to have zones or mandates or enough desert islands to allot to people of different generations and mental ages. It is observable that no matter what people think they think they can get along well enough as long as they have a common vocabulary in which to express their disagreements. Why people want to be bored we do not know—whether they feel that anything improving must be boring, and they have a worthy desire for self-improvement; or whether they just do not know the difference, boredom being their natural condition; but anyhow, they demand ready-made boredom. The demand is always met, because there are also numerous people who love to bore others.
