ABSTRACT

No human brain should be expected to cope with this situation, writing just before Christmas something that won't appear till the day is quite past, not to mention the New Year rushing at us simultaneously. No matter, and never mind anything we may have said to the contrary; Christmas is a grand idea anyhow. One thing that is wrong with modern literature is that people no longer read the Bible enough. If they did they would still find the greatest models of stories and style, not to mention the one tale, the Christmas story, which is beyond imagining or imitating. In our more frivolous moments, we read any books of scientific speculation we come across, and have had a copy of Physics and Philosophy, by Sir James Jeans, on the shelf for some time, which is even more instructive than the author intended.
