ABSTRACT

We have been discussing how a quantitative and relational understanding of culture is inadequate. It reduces understanding to genetic or social determinism, or to assertions of willful experience. Denied is the qualitative intelligibility of culture. We have seen that the relationalist Dewey considered non-Progressives not to evidence a since intellectual diversity, but as reactionary and evil. How, then, do Wisdom-seeking scholars view Progressives? They view them as proponents of an anti-intellectual and anti-cultural confusion. Wisdom-seeking traditions methodologically pursue an intellectual rather than relational analysis and response. It is not the intensity of willful change that matters, but rather the degree of realization of the ontological Ideal. It is not just becoming, but also Being.
