ABSTRACT

When we consider the broad question of the relationship between religion and personal adjustment, several hypotheses need to be considered. The first, presented by supporters and promoters of religion, proposes that religious faith contributes to individual wellbeing, happiness, and ‘peace of mind’. The second suggests that religion itself is an expression of psychopathology, that religiosity is a reflection of psychopathology, or at least that religion contributes to personal maladjustment. A third possibility is that emotionally disturbed people turn to religion to help them with their problems.
