ABSTRACT

As the International Olympic Committee (IOC) publication on the Games states, the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) are distinct from other sport events, as they also integrate a Culture and Education Programme (CEP) into the Games Programme, providing a truly unique experience for the young athletes and local youth. The chapter introduces some suggestions for CEP-based development in terms of Olympic Education and the IOCs recent focus on the entourage of athletes. While analysing the similarities and differences between the CEP in 2010 and 2012, it discusses the impact and value of the CEP, which will be followed by highlighting educational experiences at each event in terms of non-formal and informal learning. The chapter has non-formal ways of learning and education as encompassing a variety of organised workshops, training and development programmes that take place at sites beyond formal educational systems. The unique experiences of the CEPs in Singapore and Innsbruck serve as excellent bases for the forthcoming YOG.
