ABSTRACT

In terms of strength and conditioning, the past is a relative term, as the industry as we know it is young and undoubtedly emerging. In fact, the modern strength and conditioning profession was born in the unlikely surroundings of Lincoln, Nebraska. History is a great educator and the story of Boyd Epley and the origins of the strength and conditioning industry, as well as being an interesting side note as to how the industry was founded, also highlight a number of key factors. The landscape of sport is very different from Epley’s world. Strength and conditioning has become an integral part of the performance plans of athletes in the vast majority of sports, with the strength and conditioning coach playing an important role in the majority of sports performance teams. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
