ABSTRACT

This chapter provides diagnostic elements of exercise addiction, including references for measurement tools for determining whether exercise addiction is present. It offers a variety of counseling strategies for addressing exercise addiction in clients. The chapter shows that individuals start exercising as a healthy habit. As they become more and more involved, for a variety of reasons, they may start engaging in it more often, to the point where the exercise behavior may take over their lives and control them. Exercise psychologists who are not also licensed in clinical/counseling psychology should collaborate with others who are licensed to avoid working outside the ethical scope of practice. Some may feel comfortable with being addicted to exercise and may even see their addiction as a badge of honor. But most exercisers would prefer not to be addicted/controlled and would prefer to have exercise as a healthy habit.
