ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of two alternate applied models of health behavior change with a focuses on exercise behavior and adherence: the disconnected values model and the intentional development model. From individual psychosocial variables to changes at the social and structural levels, the models integrate comprehensive theories inherent in behavioral psychology, exercise psychology, and positive psychology, with practical applications for exercise researchers, practitioners, and participants. The chapter attempts to provide strategies to create the personal energy and situational conditions that will promote a healthy lifestyle and the motivation to change the way. National and global objectives have called for developing innovative scientist–practitioner interventions that promote a person's decision to start and maintain an exercise program and other forms of physical activity. The Intentional Development Model encompasses the details needed for purposeful change and includes all the mechanisms and processes by which change occurs. The model uses an eco-developmental approach, focusing on both ecological and personal change over time.
