ABSTRACT

In her own words, Gemma Jackson echoes what others have been saying about the role of the unconscious. Grasping the overall arc of the film, Gemma says she has to suspend her rational facilities and ‘Zen herself’ into the world of whatever movie she is working on. From this comes a vision for the design and the look of the whole production. At the other end of the scale, the microdetail of a production design can be solved by finding the one, exactly right, chair. Gemma has been a collaborative designer for many years and remains deeply appreciative of the craftsmen who turn the products of her imagination into physical objects. As a woman in a world dominated by male directors, cinematographers and producers, she combines sensitivity with a clear confidence in her own vision. Gemma's personal and creative career has been accompanied by her own journey of individuation and self-knowledge — a theme that is picked up in the final chapter Anima-animus.
