ABSTRACT
Switzerland, Sunday 8.20pm: Maria is standing half way up the terrace staircase beside a large group of chanting football fans. The game is going on behind her back because she is concentrating on selling ice creams and cold drinks. This is frustrating for Maria since she is an avid fan and devoted football player. But for the diminutive 14 year old of Italian migration background, it is still preferable to working in the seated areas where the “fans” barely cheer or shout. The terraces are where the action takes place, where the atmosphere is created.
