ABSTRACT

In Chapter 8 we argued that human motivation is inadequately modelled by instrumental rationality. Human behaviour needs to be understood as social action in which reciprocal rights are central to explaining how rational actions may be constrained by social norms. It follows that effective interventions favouring criminal justice and social justice are primarily those which are focussed at the level of the community. Even where interventions are directed towards individuals, the effect of immediate and national community will need to be taken into account.
