ABSTRACT

Leonald believes that good men and women will step forward to lead the country into a brighter future. The cauldron of violence that was Burundi for forty years after independence produced countless examples of resilience, citizens who offer the promise of a better future for the entire nation. The United States spends as much on its military as the rest of the world combined. Emerging from its civil war, the founders of the University of Ngozi understood the need for security, but they also saw the importance of best case thinking and established this new institution of higher learning with a firm commitment to the promotion of peace. Resilience is a factor in surviving trauma, from personal family violence to cultural recovery from war, famine, and natural disasters. Then there is moving on, whether it is children moving out of poverty through school programs and education or ex-combatants overcoming post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and putting their civilian lives back together.
