ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in this book. The book explains the relation between Carl Schmitt's theoretical work and his political commitments. Schmitt's thought is orientated towards the problem of political order and locates the solution in spatial divisions, where other ordering distinctions arise. Space offers the first comprehensive account of Schmitt's spatial thought and presents a spatial thinker, an argument novel not only within the field of geography, but also within the expansive secondary literature from other disciplines. The book focuses on Schmitt, who highlights the central importance of the distinction between universalist and pluralist forms of world order, unipolarity and multipolarity. The appearance of new translations of Schmitt's work provides a resource for critical engagements with present global geo-orderings. These texts are particularly of interest in regard to the relationship between biopolitics and geopolitics in Schmitt's work and how they change relationship in the current global political situation.
