Reading: and a composite model for word recognition and production
In Chapters 5 and 6 we gradually put together a model for the production and comprehension of spoken words, and for the production of written words, culminating in the model shown in Figure 7.1 (p. 152). This chapter is concerned with reading rather than writing. In Figure 8.1 , the model we shall use in this chapter, processes speciﬁ c to spelling and writing have been stripped off (for now) and replaced with processes speciﬁ c to reading. As we shall see, a model for reading needs to preserve those processes which are also involved in speech comprehension and production.
