ABSTRACT
Though nominally an economic and social historian for most of my academic career, the history of economics has always been my real intellectual haven, and I cannot refrain from saying how privileged I feel to have been President of this Society — small though we are amid the great national and multinational conglomerates. Moreover, that sentiment is all the more pure and unalloyed now that the arduous task of organizing the annual meeting is well behind me.
