ABSTRACT
The rapid improvement of paper technology during the 19th century, particularly during the Victorian period, resulted in a large number of innovations in movable books. As Iona and Peter Opie remark, “to the connoisseur, the golden age of the mechanical book was the second half of the nineteenth century” (Opie and Opie 1975, 1055).
