ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at Macao's urban identity from the period of 1557–1999/2009, yet it particularly concentrates on the post-handover decade and the territory's identity question in relation to recently accelerated urban change. The analysis examines the processes of urban transformation at the peninsula and observes how current rapid urbanization is severely questionable in sustaining local qualities, sense of place and identity as Macao urban space is becoming largely unidentifiable. Furthermore the Pearl River Delta region is witnessing an exceptionally fast development, particularly in the last decades, which scale of growth has superseded long-established administrative boundaries of individual governments. 1

The Greater PRC City-region has all along been China's leading region pioneering reform and open door policies, and is also the major area of cooperation among Hong Kong, Macao and the Mainland. The successful cooperation among Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in the past 30 years has created a city-region which is one of the most unique in the world. 2
