ABSTRACT

Enriched by its early Catholic music history and unique cultural, geographical and institutional conditions, Macao's Catholic music has formed a prosperous and colourful soundscape, to which the plentiful and higher-levelled musical composition is one of its fundamentals. The individual features and culture of this creativity have drawn attention to it. With the twentieth century elapsing, a comprehensive re-examination, in both historical and international perspectives, of these religious musical works and their creative features and contributions is needed. A study of the connotative cultural meanings is of high academic value, and is also an important preparation for a more detailed comprehensive research of the history and culture of Macao Catholic music.
