ABSTRACT

The goal of LES is to simulate three-dimensional, unsteady, turbulent flows and hence methods that were developed for laminar flows or that have been successful in the context of RANS may not be adequate for LES. Moreover, in LES the unsteadiness of the flow that is comprised of eddies of different size, frequency, energy content and longevity, respectively needs to be reproduced correctly. This puts a high demand on the numerical method, which needs to meet certain requirements in terms of its accuracy, however, as will be discussed below, a high order of the method alone does not guarantee a correct reproduction of the flow physics.
