ABSTRACT

The previous three chapters have focused on the dimension-based approach to AC design and implementation. Dimension-based ACs (DBACs) have reigned, almost exclusively, as the most popular approach in both the practitioner and academic realms. Relatively little has been written, however, on an alternative task-based conceptualization of AC ratings. In this chapter, I explore and develop theory relating to the task-based approach to ACs. This type of AC has adopted several labels over the course of its relatively short history, including task-based assessment, task-specific ACs, outcome-based ACs, role-based ACs, and task-based ACs (Goodge, 1988; Hoffman et al., 2007; Lance, 2008a; Lowry, 199). In the following three sections, the term task-based AC (TBAC) will be used for simplicity.
