ABSTRACT

A limited amount of research has been conducted in Iran in relation to domestic violence and its prevalence. The Ministry of Internal Affairs in Iran, (equivalent to the Home Office in the UK) conducted an extensive quantitative study of domestic violence in 2004, in the form of a national survey in 28 counties. The report was published in 32 volumes, involving 12,596 women and 2,066 men. However, despite the large scope of the research, the information from the report is not readily available to the public, as the report can only be accessed in the libraries of the ministries of research by journalists, researchers or scholars, probably because domestic violence in Iran is a highly politicized issue. A report on the above research reveals that 66% of Iranian women have been physically abused at least once since the beginning of their marriage. It also discloses that there are significant disparities between different provinces (Ghazi-Tabatabai et al. 2004).
