Critical Educational Practices for Changing Negative Attitudes
Published Curriculum Guides and Activity Books With the passage of P.L. 94-142, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act in 1975, children with disabilities suddenly enjoyed the right to be placed in least restrictive educational settings. This mandate, in turn, presented the need to prepare non-disabled students for such processes as mainstreaming and inclusion. Accordingly various activity compendia, curriculum guides and disability awareness bulletins appeared in the system from pre-school through college. These materials described a wide variety of methods for changing negative attitudes toward students with disabilities. (Appendix I presents a bibliography of curriculum guides and activity books on disability awareness and prejudice reduction). All of these resources contain activities for classroom use and help guide curriculum building.
