The Israeli kibbutz— a communal farm or settlement— was an amalgamation of early twentieth-century socialism and Zionism. Kibbutzim succeeded in establishing communal life and property and in changing traditional patriachical family structure, but they did not succeed in establishing gender equality (Palgi, 1994; Safir, 1983,1993).
