ABSTRACT

The metaphor of the clockwork universe played a central role in the discussions of the Scientific Revolution at its height. Leading champions were René Descartes, Robert Boyle, and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz; the chief adversary was Isaac Newton. After Newton, the use of the metaphor declined, rapidly in England, more gradually on the Continent.
