ABSTRACT

Manual work carried out in the laboratory stands at the heart of a new approach to the study of nature that emerged in the Scientific Revolution. Like botanical gardens, cabinets of curiosities, and anatomy theaters, the laboratory became emblematic of this new approach because it was a site in which nature was experienced directly rather than through the redaction and consultation of texts.
