ABSTRACT
An important figure in the passage from the world of the “pretty nearly” to the universe of precision. Thanks to his exceptional aptitude for observation, his ingenuity in improving his instruments and observational procedures, and his persistent quest for precision, he contributed to the progress of many branches of science, most particularly astronomy and geodesy.
