Marriage, Sexuality and Polygamy
In this chapter I discuss a selection of women’s postings about their personal lives. It is important to consider the institution of marriage because in Islam it is the only legitimate site for exploring and enjoying one’s sexuality (Sachedina 1990). I also look at women’s expectations regarding their husbands and their interpretation of circumstances which make divorce possible. Views on sexuality are explored, as they closely intertwine with concepts of marriage. Discussions on marriage are also the context for women’s explorations of issues of hierarchy, power, control, rights and responsibilities in the fourth of my themes: the polygamous marriage. Views that emerge in all these explorations feed back into the three previously identified categories of women’s perceptions of gender relations in Islam.
