ABSTRACT

Reality therapy began in the 1960s in a mental hospital and a correctional institution and has spread to populations far removed from severe emotional disturbance and criminal behavior. It is based on the two interrelated premises—that people should be held responsible for their behavior and that 340people choose how they behave. Formulated by psychiatrist William Glasser, reality therapy and its underlying theory—choice theory—have been applied to a wide variety of problem behaviors and human endeavors.
