ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the historical and global nature of social class in society and how membership of a class may determine educational attainment. It discusses the concepts of cultural capital and cultural reproduction and the part these play in maintaining inequalities in society. Finally, the chapter considers some of the reasons for the underachievement of working-class children as a group in school.
