Texts and their authority

In a World Religions model of religion, one of the most fundamental features to be identified is a core text or foundational set of scriptures. For some religions, this seems straightforward: the Hebrew Bible for Judaism; the Bible for Christians;1 the Qur’an for Islam; the Guru Granth Sahib for Sikhs. In standard introductions, the equivalent in Hinduism is often taken to be the Veda.
