ABSTRACT

In early July our insect collecting kit arrives and I take it out to Jay. First we stop at McDonald’s, which has become our customary meeting place since school is out, and have a soda and plan our day. I show Jay the books I’ve purchased for us, an insect guide and the biography of Charles Henry Turner, the first Black entomologist (Ross, 1997). The insect guide is a Peterson First Guide, designed for children and recommended by Harry (Leahy, 1987).
