ABSTRACT

These methods provide the context in which the women are able to write about their lives after the first week of the course. This exercise is very useful in terms of selfr e fl ection and the development of writing s kill s which are an a l ysed and discussed i n later sessions culmi nating in a visi t to Bradford and Ilkley Community Col l ege (BICC ) Communication Workshop. Students can follow a programme of work here if they wish to improve thei r writing sk ills. Var ious other vi s its are made which gi ve a pract ica l insight into further courses the women can take subsequently. Visits to the SICC Math s . Workshop where the women all tryout a diagnostic test, and the BICC Computer Unit where every one has a chance to use a computer, ensure that the course does not concentrate on the traditional areas of education for women. There is also a visit to the National Muse um of Photography, Film and Television Education Unit, the a1m of which is to develop a critical awa r eness of visual images. Again, this ma y lead to a follow-on course for those women in the group who are interested.
