ABSTRACT

University education in Kenya typifies higher education throughout sub-Saharan Africa. An anemic, poorly supported social service at independence has grown into the dominant national institution. The system of education pervades even the most peripheral regions and touches virtually every family. Although the expansion of schooling opportunities has been one of Kenya's greatest accomplishments, higher education remains an area of very real concern. Driven by the robust nature of primary and secondary school growth, higher education enrollments have increased to the point that public coffers are severely strained and facilities overcrowded. As a result. higher education in Kenya has entered a time of unparalleled change. Policies and profiles accurate one month are quickly superseded by more recent events. The information included in this chapter must be considered in that light.
