ABSTRACT

There is striking evidence to show that towns and cities across the UK have undergone dramatic transformations since the mid-twentieth century, arguably for the better. Six major processes have been at work that have driven and shaped the changes, which have bene ted some places and groups, but not others. These processes are post-industrialism, globalisation, changing inequalities and exclusion, growing social and cultural diversity, the emergence of new forms of urban governance and the creation of new types of urban space.
