Learning to retire
Life may be viewed as a passage through time, but the world in which that journey takes place is undergoing very rapid change. In years past, people could expect to live in a world that changed hardly at all from the time that they were born until the time that they died. They changed and gained more knowledge about it, but the world apparently did not change and so the wisdom of the elders was useful and influential. Elders had lived longer and had learnt the answers to some of the problems that younger people faced. Now things are different. Modernity has brought with it tremendous changes. Whether this is a post-modern phase is debatable, but certainly the world is still undergoing tremendously rapid change and elders are not so highly regarded any more because the knowledge of the modern world is not necessarily their knowledge. Apparently it is the knowledge of younger people. This is a period of late modernity.
