ABSTRACT

The objective of this chapter is to present a high-level introduction to biometrics. Discussions range from basic processes to technical factors and highlight the characteristics of certain biometric technologies. Some common misconceptions are also discussed. The discussions are essential for grasping the possible legal implications of using biometrics and, concomitantly, for finding solutions for attendant legal problems. To establish a solid technical background for further study, some other closely related technologies that are commonly used in combination with biometrics are also explained. Although this is a rather technical chapter, an attempt has been made to make it comprehensible to legal professionals. Hence, the most technical aspects (such as mathematical parameters) have been purposefully omitted.
