ABSTRACT

Due to their higher density, townhouse communities are perceived of as places with reduced public and private open spaces. In fact, once the area for dwellings and circulation is deducted, a relatively small space remains for other uses. When properly designed, such projects, however, can have a variety of innovative outdoor places that address the recreational needs of all dwellers. This chapter examines open areas, lists their possible uses, provides indexes as to their sizes, details design and illustrates suitable configurations.
