Primary Languages across the curriculum
What are the cross-curricular opportunities for learning a foreign language in the primary classroom? After due consideration of this question, trainees invariably respond that they can think of no area of the curriculum where languages could not be linked effectively. Clearly, then, there are ample opportunities for primary languages to be reinforced at primary level using teaching strategies with which the primary teacher is familiar and comfortable. Including languages in cross-curricular planning demonstrates to children that the acquisition of language skills and language learning are an integral part of the curriculum. This is vital to assist in changing the attitude that still persists, that languages are not as important as other subjects or are not learnt ‘properly’ until KS3.
