Critical Review of How to Do Things with Words
D U R IN G his lifetime Austin fathered one book, a translation of Frege’s Foundations of Arithmetic. In 1961, one year after Austin’s death, Urmson and Warnock collected his Philosophical Papers (PhP). In their foreword to PhP, Urmson and Warnock expressed the hope that Austin’s Harvard lectures on the concept of performatives be published later. Urmson fulfilled this hope in 1962 with the publication of How To Do Things With Words (HTD ), the book presently under discussion. Earlier the same year Warnock had edited Sense and Sensibilia (S & S).
