ABSTRACT

Although 1980 had its share of unfortunate events (e.g., John Lennon was shot dead in New York City and Iran held Canadian and U.S. Embassy workers hostage), it also shined. We were captivated by the grace and skill of the Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci in the Summer Olympics. Voyager 1 reached Saturn and sent back data on its 14 moons and more than 1,000 rings. A phenomenal book, A Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole, was published. 1
