ABSTRACT
Despite the recognised contradictory interests of Pakistan with regard to Islamist militant groups, there is a recognition that the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan cannot be brought to any type of successful conclusion without the cooperation of Pakistan. Furthermore, the USA has greater interest in preventing the “Talibanisation” or collapse of a nuclear-armed Pakistan than it has in stabilising Afghanistan.
