Philosophy and rational theology

The Arabic-speaking world was deeply affected by the discovery and translation of ancient Greek philosophical works that took place in the course of the Muslim expansion, especially in Syria. Traditional Jewish authors in that cultural sphere participated in this exciting rediscovery of the classical legacies of Plato, Aristotle and other great philosophers. Although the Jewish acquaintance with the philosophical tradition was mediated by syntheses that were fi rst formulated by Islamic thinkers, the rationalist interpretation of religion was a more lasting trend in the Jewish community.
