ABSTRACT

For pork, the two chains are encouraging suppliers to adopt a comprehensive plan to eliminate sow gestation stalls (small crates housing a single sow and its piglets). Cargill Pork, McDonald’s biggest supplier, is working with its contracted pig farms to achieve this goal. Today, 50 % of Cargill’s contractors have eliminated their use of the crates. Wendy’s incentivizes the transition through preferential buying. Currently, 10 % of Wendy’s pork products meet the standard; the company’s goal is to have 20 % of its suppliers eliminate the crates.
