Frito-Lay, a well-known manufacturer of snack products, is committed to improving the sustainability of its product line through energy and water conservation, and through waste and emissions reductions. In service of this goal, its plants employ numerous production methods that are unique and innovative in the industry, including solar concentration to heat cooking oil, solar electricity, water reclamation and recycling, biomass boilers, stack heat recovery and food scrap recycling. The company has set a goal of having all of its plants be “zero landfi ll” by 2011. In May 2010, the Frito-Lay facility in Casa Grande, Arizona won the Manufacturing Plant of the Year award from the Arizona Manufacturers’ Council and the Arizona Chamber of Commerce, in recognition of its sustainability and community programs.
