ABSTRACT

In modern society we have systematically and successfully made our daily lives less physically active. Technological development has made it possible to avoid physical effort and an increasing proportion of men and women are physically inactive during their leisure time (Haskell et al., 2007). We use computers, time-saving apparatus and various household appliances to an ever greater extent. Centrally located lifts and escalators often appear to be the most apparent and comfortable way of getting from one floor to another. Using the car for short distances also seems to be an obvious alternative. In short, our daily tasks have become much less physically demanding.
